In the veritable slot machine of narrative TV, Twin Peaks: The Return just scored a massive jackpot with Part 11. Equal parts charged, funny, and bizarre, we explore more and more of the town of Twin Peaks this installment, which is welcome as it submerges us deeper into the familiar soap opera of broken hearts, revenge, and strange coincidences that beset the town. And the many locations we visit outside of Twin Peaks we slowly discover are not quite so different after all.

Twin Peaks: The Return - Part 06

Twin Peaks: The Return (2017) finally won me over fully in Part 06. David Lynch and Mark Frost have taken such a radically different approach to this show over their original series that it can be difficult to adjust to the new wavelength. But the show is hitting its stride and I can feel the personality of the town of Twin Peaks begin to reveal itself through this new show's inciting incident, the tragedy of Richard's fatal hit and run. It reaches the exquisite heights of unapologetic emotion that only Twin Peaks is capable of taking us.

Twin Peaks: The Return - Part 05

Diminished capacity Golem-Coop somehow manages to be both maddeningly frustrating and joyously entertaining to watch at the same time. Frustrating because we are desperate for Agent Cooper to become his old, brilliant, sharp-witted self again and become a driver of the plot and action in the show once more. We miss his random philosophizing amid his summaries to Diane and his sharp deductions that he delivers as matter-of-fact asides.

Wonder Woman (2017)

For being one of the oldest, most beloved, most popular, and best-selling comic book characters in history, the character of Wonder Woman has taken an unusually long time to find herself on the big screen. She was first written and drawn in 1941 and would not appear on movie screens until this year in 2017. If a baby girl were born on the day of Wonder Woman's comic book premiere, that same little girl would have to wait until she was an elderly woman of 75 years before she could sit down and watch the first feature film adaptation at the local cinema.

Twin Peaks: The Return - Parts 03 & 04

In Parts 03 and 04 of Twin Peaks: The Return (2017), David Lynch takes us deeper into Agent Dale Cooper's lucid nightmare of an existence as he attempts to escape from the Black Lodge and return to his own body back on Earth, or at least the Earth we are more familiar with. And many old friends concerned for Cooper begin unraveling the mystery of his original disappearance 25 years earlier.

Twin Peaks (1990-91) was like the candle that burned twice as bright and lived half as long. For it to get a rebirth is like the Phoenix taking flight again after resurrecting out of its own ashes. It is an amazing time to be a TV viewer.

It is a blast from the past as Joss Whedon and the principal cast of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003) have a reunion, discussion, and photo shoot with Entertainment Weekly for the show's twentieth anniversary! It is ridiculous how much time has passed, but our fearless, fresh-faced Scoobies are now mature and settled in life.

Logan (2017)

It is a bittersweet irony that the very moment Hugh Jackman perfectly portrays his screen version of Logan/Wolverine, is also the final time he will ever play the character. It is a little unfair to have the character killed off at the very apex of Jackman's craft, but at least he fulfilled the most important rule an entertainer is supposed to adhere to when ending a performance: he left us wanting more.

William the Bloody

William the Bloody is my parallel Fan Edit to ANGELUS, which follows the origin story of one of the best characters in all the Buffyverse: Spike. Although there is some crossover footage between the two cuts, William the Bloody is distinctly told from Spike's perspective and you will notice a number of additions, deletions, and major changes in the presentation of this edit that reflects his unique point of view. Between this cut and ANGELUS, all of the vampire flashbacks from Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003) and Angel (1999-2004) are revealed in their entirety.

The Master Rises

The Master Rises fan edit is my exploration of Angel and Buffy as they wrestle with some complications to their relationship and are forced to confront Buffy's mortality and her sense of despair as she accepts her own death as part of her duty as the Slayer and loses control of herself in the aftermath once she is brought back to life.

Buffy and Angel

When my Buffy and Angel fan edit is viewed in context after the first two fan edits, we see a very clear picture of how Angel has gone from secretly longing for Buffy, to becoming a helpful mysterious stranger who helps point her in the right direction, to becoming one of her most important allies. Buffy and Angel's relationship begins in earnest now as Buffy learns more about Angel and his motivations for helping her, slowly realizing Angel is completely besotted with her.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Begins

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Begins is one of the simpler fan edits I made to help bridge viewers from ANGELUS to the modern world of Buffy and Angel. It is a slightly pared down and tightened cut of Buffy's first two episodes paced better for less patient, modern viewers.

Angelus

 I long suspected that if all the Vampire flashbacks were assembled together into one or two fan edits then they would add up to an exceptionally interesting viewing experience. And the result does not disappoint, the final result feeling more like an epic length feature film rather than just bits of a TV show. I transformed these flashbacks into two parallel fan edits: "ANGELUS" and "William the Bloody."

Dune: The Complete Saga

I love David Lynch's Dune (1984). Every frame of it is a work of art. It has the most incredible production design, costumes, world building, and cast of any science fiction film I have ever seen. The Atreides family relationships with each other and with their subordinates is beautiful to behold. The dialogue is wise and darkly comedic. And up until now, no cut or edit of the film has done justice to director David Lynch's original vision. So I undertook putting together my own edit titled, "Dune: The Complete Saga."

The Watcher's Council

The Watcher's Council is a viewing guide to the TV shows and feature films of Joss Whedon. I emphasize a lot of my efforts there on presenting a guide that harmonizes the interconnected viewing order of his TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003) and its spinoff series Angel (1999-2004). But I celebrate all his work there, especially his science fiction masterpieces Firefly (2002-03) / Serenity (2004) and The Avengers 1 & 2.

35 Years of David Lynch

35 Years of David Lynch is my blog where I analyze the work of American film director David Lynch. So popular a work, I transformed it into a five-volume book series 40 Years of David Lynch, which includes additional analysis and insights than contained in the blog alone. I created the original blog to help reinvigorate some interest in and discussion of the master film director's career. David Lynch's eventual return to direct more Twin Peaks felt like a dream come true.
